Make sure you get professional help. An increase in mental health issues for our teenage girls has been seen in recent years. The consequences can be severe. For specific advice, see your GP or a psychologist who specialises in CBT for adolescents with mood disorders.

Would you set your hair on fire? Alcohol, drugs, parties, and other risky business

In 2006, psychology researchers Valerie Reyna and Frank Farley invited adolescents into their lab to have their brains scanned as they contemplated whether they would consider participating in activities that are stupendously risky.1 The list included things such as:

•swimming with sharks;

•jumping off a roof;

•setting your hair on fire;

•drinking a can of Draino; and

•other unwise, unsafe, and unhealthy activities.
